If someone murdered a member of my family, I could care less what you, the government, the lawyers, or the jury think the punishment should be. I am pretty sure that I would want them executed in a painful manner. That being said, I would probably ensure that this decision be made months after the crime is committed.

I agree! It would also be worthwhile to allow some vigilante type of justice to be performed by a murdered victim's family member. Since I belieive in letting the punishment fit the crime, I'm sure most crime victims their families would agree that a certain amount of revenge is more effective than letting the piece of scum sit on death row for 15 or 20 years & take advantage of the appeal system (at the taxpayers' expense).

Typical bleeding heart liberal rhetoric! You're absolutely right the death penalty is about vengence ... and why shouldn't it be? Why should a serial killer (or any murderer for that matter) be allowed to live after he committed a heinous, capital offense by taking an innocent person's life? Why should such a degenerate be allowed to sit in prison & mooch off government money ... or worse, be released back into society & be allowed to breed?
The reason capital punishment isn't an actual deterrent anymore is the way it's administered. It used to be swift, quick, and harsh. Nowadays, it's lethal injection (which amounts to painless euthanasia). It's basically the same method as putting a beloved pet to sleep. That's no deterrent! We should bring back firing squads, hangings, and electric chairs ... and quit allowing the criminals to sit on death row for decades AFTER the crime was committed!
Millions of Americans may be glad to see it go, but the majority of Americans (amounting to many MORE millions) are in favor of the death penalty. We don't need to abolish it ... we need it to be harsher than a painless shot in the arm.

Jesse Timmendeguas must be really excited that NJ will ban the death penalty..
He has been sitting on death row for the brutal rape and murder of 7 year old Megan Kanka (megans law).. Gosh now he need not worry. You gotta love NJ!!!!

Yes, New Jersey has done such a superb job of governance in areas such as crime, taxation, and quality of ife, that there was little left for the legislature and good Governor Corzine to do aside from the pressing need to extend the life of brutal murderers.

Wouldn't eliminating the Barbarians be a step in that direction?

I just think there are cases where the death penalty is just, as in the case where a man undeniably killed another, not by accident, not for revenge, not in the commission of theft, but purely for sport. I believe someone like that has willingly forfeited their right to a life on this planet.

I personally think we're headed the wrong direction, here. I think we should allow the families of the victims a chance at retribution. The Merovingian king, Clovis I, had a pretty good idea.
The families could decline, of course, allowing the justice system to apply whatever punishment it deems appropriate.

One thing for sure is after observing some of Corzine's questionable judgement and activities he's certainly not someone I consider capable of making a sound decision on this issue.

You'd need the wholesale resignation of the Jersey legislature to begin to accomplish that.
