Detroit is a city with nearly 700,000 people. Like all cities, there are good and bad people and things that are associated with it.
I think everybody is aware that Detroit has declined from its peak, and that crime, unemployment, and educational attainment are problems there. The reasons for the downfall are numerous and complex, and aren't simply the result of liberal policies.
Also, while we hear of the many bad things that happen in Detroit, we rarely hear of good things going on outside of a few protected areas. What about neighborhood associations - in "bad" areas no less - that are taking abandoned buildings and turning them into community centers so residents have a place to go and can learn skills that will help them obtain meaningful employment. People don't talk about this kind of thing very much at all.
The bottom line is that Detroit (and other somewhat similar places such as Chicago and Cleveland) are as much a part of "Real America" as the scenes and people in the truck commercials are. We don't need to deride an entire city/region because we have different experiences than they do.

Yep, the 'supporters' of these trashed cities are the cities worst enemy.
Pretending everything is normal and, 'if we had a little more taxpayer money'.......sure formula to maintain the feeding trough and keep things as they are.
Cities, as mentioned, should have their voting rights suspended after a generation of failure and city officials chosen by a statewide election. The taxpayers of those states have earned the right to ensure their wealth is not squandered in these bottomless money pits called, Newark, Detroit, et al.

Cities have been through what Detroit is going through now and yet managed to reinvent themselves. I wish Detroit well and hope it learns from other cities which have been through population decline and deindustrialisation.

I've worked Detroit, at night, for years.
I have worked downtown Chicago, Grand rapids, New Orleans, Memphis, and St. Louis, at night.
No comparison.

Most normal people would be sickened that there is such violence, regardless of race, and want to take action to stop it from happening, both directly and through improving their situations, backgrounds, and environments. Keep in mind that most victims of violent crimes in Detroit are black themselves, yet we rarely hear about this. I wonder why?
Also, Detroit was plundered by sociopath politicians (Kwame Kilpatrick, Monica Conyers, etc.) during the 2000-10 decade and while they might be Democrats, they do not represent mainstream liberal ways of thinking.

I'm not in favor of denigrating southern states either. There are tons of good people in Appalachia, the Mid South, and the Deep South. It would be great to hear some success stories about helping the community there as well.

Detroit's problem is not "liberals" - the problem is a staggeringly corrupt government that is completely entrenched in the city like some form of cancer. Top that off with population collapse, rampant poverty and crime, and countless vanished jobs, and it is no wonder the place is in such bad shape. Anyone who honestly thinks that voting (R) instead of (D) would have prevented this is delusional.
