English literacy requirement as a component in the naturalization
English literacy requirement as a component in the naturalization
of aliens within the United States. Surprisingly, such a requirement
Has existed in statutory form for less than 100 years, having first been enacted in
Currently, federal law (8 U.S.C. Section 1423) provides that:
(a) No person except as otherwise provided in this
subchapter shall hereafter be naturalized as a citizen zen of the United States upon his own application who cannot demonstrate — (1) an understanding of the English language, including an ability to read, write,
and speak words in ordinary usage in the English language:

I do not have to imagine such a country. I have read about it in the history books. It was not a pleasant place for anyone different.
I’ll gladly put up with the differences, even if I have to learn a foreign language, than the horrors of creating the sameness.

Your the type of person who takes a country that runs like a well-oiled machine and degrades it to a rusty, unusable heap of scrap. You are the type of person that lives to be everybody's individual friend yet has no regard for the whole nation. I find your mentality very selfish, inconsiderate and most of all... ignorant.
How many times have you read Brave New World???

Some have said our country using other languages is due to NAFTA but why don't we see French as much as Spanish next to our English signs? Even if this is true if Mexico and Canada want to do business with us then they should be able to use English. It is past time English is made our national language and stop all this nonsense in our schools.
While watching a marathon of Are You the Next Top Model over Christmas break with my DD I noticed a few things. The most important one being when these models were sent to Japan, France and Africa they had to find there way around towns to locate a shop or a photography shooting place. They showed street signs in these countries and they were in the languages of those countries no English beside them. So America needs to get back to our roots using English on signs, phone recordings and printed matter!

Once again, I am amazed at how many mis-understand the "English Only" debate.
It is not to force / make people speak a particular language - people have been, are and will continue to be able to speak whatever language they wish -
What "English Only" applies to is the operation of Government - that, for governmental purposes, the "official" language would be English. This is exactly the same concept as many other countries where THEIR language is the offical one for governmental purposes.
"English Only" would also apply to the area of contract law - that the "official" language, for an enforceable contract, in the judicial system, would be English.
"English Only" would also apply to Voting - Ballots would be printed in English Only. Candidate guides could be printed in whatever language the voting district wants. But, ballots would be in English.
And that is basically it.
I have read many comments by some posters in various threads that say we should be "more like" other countries. If they feel that way, then, they should be at the front of the line to support an "English Only" amendment

If that's truly the law I know dozens of lawbreakers...and the law is obviously ignored by those who decide who becomes a citizen.
