It is in Illinois, and not on the list

My apologies if this has already been covered, but there is absolutely no correlation between the strictness of gun laws and gun violence. None. That's why they picked 10 states instead of looking at all 50.

For every 10 states where there appears to be a relationship, there are 10 more that don't. My favorite example is California, they have the strictest gun laws in the country according to the Brady Campaign, and their gun homicide rate is just above the national average. If the OP was right, California would be the safest state in the nation. And before you go saying they just get their guns from states with looser laws, stop. Arizona and Nevada have the weakest gun laws in the country and the EXACT same gun violence rates as California.

If you don't believe this, take the Brady Campaign ratings by state, or your favorite ratings if you don't like theirs, and calculate the correlation coefficient to gun violence. It'll be very close to 0. That means no correlation, period.

And Vermont has almost no gun laws and is one of the safest states along with some other neighboring states. If you want common sense approach that protects 2nd amendment and also safety vote Bernie Sanders!

Ol' Bernie wants to ban "assault rifles", which are used in fewer than 300 gun deaths each year. Talk about a waste of money under the guise of safety.

Why not spend that money on something that saves more lives? Priorities. Bernie doesn't have them.

In general, these states have a few things in common:
  • Weak gun laws.
  • High poverty rates.
  • Low educational attainment.
  • Dominated by Republicans and conservatives.

1. Louisiana
2. Mississippi
3. Alaska
4. Wyoming
5. Oklahoma
6. Montana
7. Arkansas
8. Alabama
9. New Mexico
10. South Carolina

Then don't move there.
