It depends on the context. Don't see why anyone would want to use the word though knowing that is controversial. It appears some want to stir up controversy and continue to feed the racial divide in America.
Black
That's my point of the question.
Both negro in UNCF and Redskins in Washington are used in a context that's not offensive, yet there's only a brewhaha about Redskins, not negro.
Why is that?
I haven't a single person say that the United Negro College Fund should change it's name because the word 'negro' is offensive to some blacks. Yet that's EXACTLY what's being said about the Redskins name.
The question is moot. Why is anyone using the term Negro, unless it's out of historic deference? I don't have a problem w/ the word. I have a problem w/ someone who KNOWS it's, at least, out of vogue and still chooses to use it. Why?
To me, it's the closest substitute for "n!&&er" that someone can coyly say w/o revealing their true feelings ie Clive "one more thing I know about the Negro" Bundy.
Out of vogue?
You must be a pop progressive.
"Black" and "White" is pretty utilitarian for a fanciful progressive, don't you think?
Whiteortatic Negronomics?
Red and yellow, black and white, all the precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children - except for the brown.
Like "colored" it's a bit antiquated, but I'm not so sure it's offensive.
I guess it's all in the context in which it is used.
I've heard elderly blacks and whites use it to some extent, and I never really thought of it as offensive coming from them.
Now once in a great blue, you'll hear whites who clearly did not grow up in that time period attempting to use it in a disparaging way that as a reflection of the past.
This was brought up in a discussion and got me to thinking about the Redskins.
I was curious as to whether the "United Negro College Fund" name is offensive to anyone.
I'm white, by the way.
No but, The National Association for the Advancement of COLORED People is.

I doubt that you're really interested in a different perspective, but the people upset about the Redskins name see it as a term more like n***** than negro. Maybe you can find a long-established and reputable organization that uses the term 'redskin' in its name as a way to refute this view.

Funny thing is a lot of Native Americans don't have an issue with the term and some predominantly Native American schools even use Redskins as their sports team name.
Now that Im older I can understand it may harken back to the Uncle Tom days.
Im tired of being called white. Im European-American....and I will be so offended if you call me white anymore.
