The lack of reading has gotten to the point of ridiculousness in our nation. The massive amount of studies done on the economic stratification of wealth in the US provides us with the opportunity to see the results of some serious academic labors rather than the usual crap from TV or radio nuts passing for educated discourse these days. Read and learn, it isn't all that painful, opinions without the research to support them are just hot exhaust from the overexertion of the uneducated mind. People who are poor are poor for numerous reasons, the complexities of our society are getting to the point that most can't understand the world they inhabit let alone show some empathy for those who suffer from the excesses of a lopsided economical construct.....

You silly gooses there is only one reason for poverty. Greed. Aqcuiring more than we need. It is a grave sin. Yes Jesus said the poor will always be with us he said this because he understood that greed will always be with us.

That deserves reps for the chuckle. Lots of fators come into play. Some can be helped & are the results of personal choices, but many are just a roll of the dice.

Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread devoted to this topic. Why are poor people poor? Are they lazy, stupid? Are they disadvantaged through no fault of their own? Is there a way out (not just for the exceptional few, but for all)? Do we have an obligation as a society to help? What are your thoughts?
Most everyone who is rich was born that way or had opportunities or advantages that others don't have or just outright stole it from others via usury and/or greed. There is no such thing as a "self-made man". There is no "right" to be rich, everyone is taxed that has utilized the opportunities and advantages of a country to get where they are.

We as a society have an obligation to provide as many opportunities and advantages to ALL our citizens as is possible, and to balance out unfair inequities as fairly as possible.

Yep. We nearly lost our shorts due to horrendous and unexpected medical bills despite having medical insurance. While we are not poor, it is a huge burden that we are not able to overcome, and will be struggling with for many years to come. I can easily see how someone who gets cancer or any other terminal illness or has a catastrophic accident can become poor no matter their best efforts not to.

Some are poor due to things outside of their control. Laid off from a job and living in an area with very limited prospects for example.
Some are poor due to poor role models and even poorer preperation for life.
Some are poor because its just easier not to have to get up for work.
I drive by low income housing and have to wonder.
Too poor to pay rent or a mortgage but they have money for late model cars, atvs and boats. Sat. dishes on every unit. One can only wonder what their priorities are.

Because it is valuable to a few, to keep them that way.

I don't think that is true at all. But then, we all have different definitions of what constitutes rich and poor.

That is an outright lie.

There are millions of self-made Americans. I know quite a few.
