The US would love nothing more; Cubans are not quite as receptive to the idea.

As of this date and despite the swirling rumours on the internet, Fidel Castro is still very much alive.

Not under any circumstances I can foresee.
I do expect a normalization of relations though.

I have to agree with all of the above posters; Cuba can go in any direction once Fidel passes----------Raul does not seem to have the charisma of his brother.

Having actually been there, I would feel confident in saying that there is no way in hell that the Cubans would allow themselves to be a colony of the US....again. That's what started the revolution and put Castro in power in the first place.

The US would move for statehood if they decided to attack - that way, there's no leaving the union, as the Civil War proved.

What will be of Cuba after Fidel?
There has been a lot of speculation about what will become of Cuba after Fidel. My own opinion is that things will not change much. Although Cubans there are Fidelistas and not Comunists, the goverment controls the life of everyone. The options to revolt are close to zero from within and at zero from outside.
As to it becoming a state or territory, no way. The Cuban society has not lived by capitalistics standards for decades. Such a change will be impractical and very costly; look at the experience with Eastern European countries after the fall of the Soviet Union. Besides, the states will not allow a new state such as Cuba and even Puerto Rico because of their representation in Congress will be greater than many of the small states.
If you know the answer to the question I bring up, you might be the next Nostradamus...
