The sanctions, such as they are, that have been instituted so far have been extremely mild. Putin knows Obama is puffing up like a peacock, but when push comes to shove, will do nothing.
Money/banking/USD sanctions and economic isolation can be harsh on the people. But the Russkies are used to suffering, so in the end it may not make much difference.
This sort of thing can easily set back their economy and their move toward globalization of the Ruble/BRICS currency alliance.
Russia’s richest businessmen are increasingly frantic that President Vladimir Putin’s policies in Ukraine will lead to crippling sanctions and are too scared of reprisal to say so publicly, billionaires and analysts said.
So, why are you so unconcerned about your liberal policies driving employment offshore and investment offshore?
I mean, you can recognize how it's bad for Russia, but you're a fanatical advocate for high taxes and regulation here, which is just as ruinous.

If Putin doesn’t move to end the war in Ukraine in the wake of last week’s downing of a Malaysia Air jet in rebel-held territory, he risks becoming an international outcast like Belarus’s Aleksandr Lukashenko, whom the U.S. famously labeled Europe’s last dictator, one Russian billionaire said on condition of anonymity. What’s happening is bad for business and bad for Russia, he said.
“The economic and business elite is just in horror,” said Igor Bunin, who heads the Center for Political Technology in Moscow. Nobody will speak out because of the implicit threat of retribution, Bunin said by phone yesterday. “Any sign of rebellion and they’ll be brought to their knees.”
All these Billionares have to remember is what happened to Mikhail Khodorkovsky to remember who they are and what their place is in today's Russia. Then they will take a deep breath, sit back down and be good little boys.

But they are not sitting back, they are in process of moving their wealth out of the country, hopefully to US.
You have to hit Putin's Russia where it hurts, and any sanctions that hurt these oligarchs that hurt Putin is what is needed.
I find it amusing, if not somewhat sad, that the Obama Administraton and the world look to impose tough sanctions on Russia for its atrocious actions, and it is the hypocritical conservatives who once again cry and whimper that on the one hand, Obama is not tough enough; then on the other hand, when tough sanctions are instituted against Putin's rich friends these "conservatives" object, "You are engaging in class warfare by imposing sanctions on the rich!" How pathetic.

As soon as Mr Putin notices, he will remind them that tax evasion is a crime in Russia. Who in Russia hasn't evaded taxes?
I noticed that Mr Putin just signed a law passed by his stooges in the Duma prohibiting advertising on private media outlets. The Moscow Times people estimated this will eliminate over 300 media channels from Russia, including newspapers, magazines, cable TV channels, radio, TV and Internet channels. When one sees this sort of evil you have to just admire the audacity. I hope The Moscow Times is not one of them.
