What are your thoughts on them? We hear a lot about racial and ethnic minorities falling in lockstep with the Democrats, but not so much on sexual minorities, even though it is also the case. Plus, a lot of LGBT people grew up in conservative households and might actually agree with Republicans on many issues.
What do you think? It seems like both groups have problems with them, but should it be that way?
They receive more hostility from Democrats for being Republican, than Republicans for being gay.
There would be many more gay Republicans if the Republican Party hadn't built so much of their base and platform on social conservatism and regulation of private, sexual behavior. (anti-porn, pro-religion in public spaces, anti-birth control, etc.) The Texas Republican Party - probably the largest state GOP party in the country - still endorses friggin "reparative therapy" to change a person's sexual preferences. Bunch of morons.
I have voted for a handful of Republicans, but all of them have been socially moderate or libertarian. I do think the party will have to move in that direction in order to remain viable.
The Log Cabin Republicans have been around for years.
Former Arizona senator, Jim Kolbe was gay, when he made a speech about trade at the 2000 GOP convention many in the audience made a scene by praying through his speech.
Correct, and they are the ones that brought forward the lawsuit against DADT and other lawsuits against laws which affect gays while Democrats stand there and try to take the credit.

That's nice, but Democrats are much more accepting of same-sex relationships than Republicans. Anyone who denies that is living in a fantasy.

Those who truly believe in personal liberty have no problem with gays or gay marriage (marriage is, after all, none of Government's business, although Government does indeed have an interest in the proper care of children and in property issues).
Problem is that there are those who claim that government should butt out of anything EXCEPT what their own personal prejudices dictate.
Either you believe in personal liberty or you dont. Pick your poison. Or shut up and be a hypocrite forever.
Many people are fiscal conservatives & social liberals. They choose what takes priority. In many instances being fiscal conservative trumps other liberal views and they vote republican. As someone noted earlier in the thread they really fall more in Libertarian circle, but with predominantly two party system votes go to the Republicans. Besides gays there are plenty of atheists that vote Republican. It is a matter of prioritization - choose your priorities.
Democrats only accept gays as long as they vote democrat. Google any thread about gay Republicans and you will discover a homophobic downpour from the left. Google Larry Craig and/or Jim West, for example.
Jim West was a state Senator from Spokane WA and was a Republican. The left arranged to hire an ex federal law enforcement agent to run a sting operation on him, entrapping him into soliciting for sexual favors.

Paul Babeu, Sheriff of Pinal County AZ is a Gay Republican who is very popular with Republican, Independant and Democrats.
