I dont expect anything huge and horrible from it-theres a LOT of other places to get oil, and as its competitive unless they can cut us off from the market in some large way its pretty irrelevant.

If ISIS tries to control the straights of Hermosa and bar traffic they will learn that America's military WILL get involved then I suspect.

Overall Im not seeing anything that really worries me, but again you seem concerned about it, so please explain why it should be a concern.
Like you said, it will affect the price of oil. As has been shown recently, even the hint of a problem anywhere in the middle east has driven prices up. I realize a lot of these price increases are due to oil speculators but we have seen increases nevertheless. I foresee a price increase in gasoline of $1.00 a gallon at least based upon oil and gasoline futures.

Also, Putin has laid a direct challenge toward the United States threatening us against our placing any military of our own in the region in close proximity to his own troops massing on the Ukraine border.

as for their threat to invade the ukraine, i am not sure that even putin wants to go that far yet. the ukraine has signed some treaties with the west that might require us to go to war with russia to defend them, and i really dont think putin wants that.

as for ISIS closing the straight of hormouz, iran has been threatening that very thing for decades, but they realize that the US navy would go in and keep that straight open to the rest of the world, and the navy wont be gentle about doing it, despite the chinese made silkworm missiles iran has procured. air strikes will take out those sites rendering them useless, and then our cruisers can mop up what is left of the iranian navy, including the kilo class submarines they bought from russia many years ago.

and the iranian air force will be no more effective against the US military than the iraqi air force was.
Are you certain that the United States would do anything other than posture? Are you sure the American people would even support a confrontation with anyone now? Putin is smart. He knows we haven't the intestinal fortitude to do anything except posture and apply meaningless sanctions. He is moving to control middle eastern oil and gasoline.

we may not have a choice depending on any treaties that have been signed with the ukraine. if we signed, and ratified, and mutual defense treaty with the ukraine, then if russia invades, we would be obligated to defend the ukraine. it would be like if russia invaded britain, we would be obligated to come to the defense of britain.

You will find that the real reason behind much of the military movements made by the western powers is to keep the present system in place, and that both Saddam and Khadafi were executed, not because they were such bad guys, but because they openly refused to use dollars in their sale of oil. It is a very interesting and complex situation, which the economic powers of the west have been camoflaging for many years, and a thorough search of this information will reveal the plans of the wars of this century, and last century.
Well said. The guiding force behind all U.S. decisions in international relations is to maintain or enhance the power of Washington to enforce its preferences, particularly the use of the USD. Ensuring that international transactions are conducted in USD gives Washington the power to sanction.

However, merely being the currency of choice is not enough. It's not as if bags of cash are routinely exchanged - there is an international banking network and the U.S. also controls it; recently the U.S. demonstrated that it is willing to use it as a political too as well and Iran was barred from participation. Many countries would love to do business with Iran, but the U.S. does not want them to do so, so they do not (or they try, get caught, and get fined/sanctioned). Of course many countries tire of taking orders from the U.S., so it's only a matter of time before the tide turns. SWIFT - SWIFT for banks.

Obama is also attempting to further increase U.S. hegemony at the expense of global freedom and for the benefit of crony capitalism and many other ills through the highly secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership. Of course the U.S. media rarely ever report on it and Americans are too stupid to be concerned about such matters so wouldn't care even if it was covered, but that's what Democracy is about in the U.S. I hear the Vietnamese are lining up to buy American made sneakers at $150 a pair. The U.S. is very sad that Ukraine is not going its way and that absent U.S. order to do something, most of the world is indifferent to its standoff with Russia. Even the lapdog EU countries only authorized their relatively weak sanctions for 90 days and even those were mostly due to the Malaysian airlines plane going down. By November this will all be water under the bridge in Europe and the U.S. will still be angry that others took the ball and started to play again.

The most pathetic part is listening to the people who think that the U.S. has the slightest interest in the well-being of others or right to self-determination if they should choose a path that is not U.S. approved. U.S. presidents and most congressmen and their 'advisers' are murderous thugs who unflinchingly kill by the millions to enforce their economic agenda.

No question the entrenched powers that be will continue to support the USD. But right now the whole BRICS thing is a pipsqueak of a show with no real guts. Long term potential, certainly. But it will be a long while before I invest in those countries using their currency. More than a decade, maybe in a generation. If I am still alive.

Sanctions, no matter what they may be, are an act of war.
