I recall once hearing Ted Kennedy talk about how increased taxes on cigarettes would bring decreased consumption, and thus better health for Americans. He referenced basic supply-demand economics, and indeed this is something any student of econ 101 can show on the back of an envelope.

Rosa DeLauro didn't specifically reference that, but no doubt the idea is the same.

Ted Kennedy and Rosa DeLauro both were ardent supporters of a higher minimum wage. The same econ 101 supply-demand analysis would show that the minimum wage on balance hurts those it is supposed to help.
DeLauro: Time to Respect Work and Give Minimum Wage Workers a Raise

They embrace econ 101 when it is to the tune of 'ka-ching.' But when it comes to the minimum wage or other price control schemes that pander to the economically illiterate, they suddenly forget their econ 101.

Just pointing out the ignorance of some people who always post things from one point of view. There's a reason why I don't see T&A or swearing on TV. It's the religious right in this country. Of course, the same people who whine about people passing laws about sugar don't bother to look at what's going on with the other side.

this is exactly the problem with liberals and conservatives these days, conservatives wonder why liberals are always pushing to tax things, and liberals are wondering why conservatives want to push bad things. the truth is that ALL OUR POLITICIANS ARE CONTROL FREAKS!!. it doesnt matter if they are liberal or conservative. they dont give a damn about the people, only their own grasp on power.

Lib dems are attempting to justify grabbing more hard earned cash from taxpayers without being obvious and hoping no one notices the accumulating tax bite.

they can't get the money they think they need in one place, there would be a revolution. The strategy is to promote health and well being as an excuse to go hither and yon and nibble taxes from obscure places Like a mouse nibbling at a loaf of bread. You might miss the little buggers gnawing a tiny bite at a time but when you add it up....you have been fleeced big time and the mice are surprisingly well fed.

I'm pretty sure that if someone was trying slip in a tax without anyone noticing that they wouldn't go out and run afoul of the beverage and candy lobby. Sorry, but your logic there just makes no sense. Care to try again?

Conservatives and Libertarians are not "promoting" excessive use of sugar, they are simply saying that we should each have the freedom to make our own choices when it comes to diet, period.... If someone wants to eat and drink themselves in to a wale? Fine, that's on them.... It's their choice, not yours.

Say this aloud and repeat as necessary....

"it is not my job to save other people from themselves" ..... Mind your OWN business, live how you want, make decisions that are beneficial to you, and let everyone else do the same!!! Quit trying to control other peoples behaviour by passing laws that aim to socially engineer society in to a neat little box that you and your ilk find acceptable.

That's the price you pay for living in a free society, get over it.

Here in SF, a soda tax is going to be on the ballot in November -- and most of the opposition to it is coming from the *left*. They claim that it imposes an unfairly disproportionate tax burden on poor people, and so the far-left "progressives" are teaming up with the big soda companies to fight it.
