It is very difficult to defeat an ideology, the ISIS ideology is dangerous to all belief systems outside their own, this includes moderate muslims. They are zealots hell bent on establishing their idea of an Islamic Calafate, you can kill them off but the ideology will live on thereby breeding new zealots with the same goal in mind.
I think we have two choices regarding ISIS and other terrorists in the Middle East. One- make a total commitment to totally destroy them, no matter the cost in innocent lives and being seen as "politically incorrect". Two- do nothing, and focus on our internal problems. Anything in between is doomed to failure. Of course, under the current adminsistration, good choices are not an option.
Do our leaders, and the people have the guts to grind it out. Don't know... The military itself does - but the media reports, the accounts on the ground that regular people hear - I wonder if we could take it. I wonder if Obama would even want to win...

If we choose to eradicate ISIS, are YOU going over there to help?
Or just make your "total commitment" by talking about it online.

What have we done since WW2 that leads you to believe that we'll win a Middle Eastern guerrilla war against an intractable and homegrown band of belligerent crazies?

I was with you right up until the last sentence. How did the pervious administration do better ? Remember them, they were the ones that lied and used the fear mongering to start the war.

Give me some examples.
What needs to be done is to make the countries that house these people responsible. The group may not be officially a country - but do guilt by association. For some stupid reason, we are still giving many of these countries aid. Cut off the spigot if they will not police their own people. And if it gets too bad, hold them responsible.
Stop the training of people in these countries... which in the end gets training to the other side.
