The whole concept of hate crimes seems pretty stupid to me. If one commits a premeditated crime, then who gives a rat's ***** why they did it. The same punishment should be given out to a black man that beats up a white man for being white as a black man that beats up another black man for his wallet or vise versa IMO.

One crime is intended to victimize by intimidation a group of people, one crime victimizes a single person. People who burn crosses on other peoples lawns aren't just guilty of trespassing and breaking the air quality ordinances.

Anyway, the state of mind of the perpetrator has been a factor in sentencing ever since man started writing down laws, so that angle won't work.

Crime is crime.

If I'm walking down the street and a gang of thugs jumps out to whip my butt and kills me, it doesn't matter a damned bit their reasoning for it, at least not to me.

I agree. Most folks who murder another hate the one they murdered else he did it for money or for some other gainful reason. The whole thing is stupid.

A woman can abort (murder) her unborn child but if someone murders a pregnant woman, he/she can be charged with committing a specially heinous act akin to a hate crime.

If I burn a cross and murder a black man, I hated that Black man.
If I didn't burn a cross but still murdered a black man, I still hated that Black man.

I believe that these laws had a place at the time they were written, but any law like this should have to be renewed every 10 years.

Society changes. We needed the civil rights laws to end bigoted separation of people in the south. Do we need that today? I believe we do not. I believe that the civil rights laws should now be repealed.

'hate crimes', in reality, are usually prosecuted as speech/thought crimes.

for instance, a thug beats you because of your race/ethnicity/sexual orientation without calling you a name that can be reasonably linked to race/ethnicity/sexual orientation - equals no 'hate crime' was committed.
