Bill Gates has given $1 million to Initiative 594. If passed by voters on November 4th the ballot initiative will require universal background checks for all firearm purchases in Washington state. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has donated 1/2 $million. Original Amazon investor Nick Hanauer has donated $1.4 million. Good luck with your Microsoft and Amazon boycotts.

First of all, that's a moronic headline from the DB. Gates has long been anti-gun. He supported another gun-control measure in 1997 which lost 71-29 at the polls. Gates is supposedly so anti gun that he refuses to use armed security--kind of dumb for one of the world's richest men, whose family could be a target for kidnapping for ransom.

Secondly the DB article conveniently neglects to report that I-594 is already opposed by the largest police organization in the state, along with the WA state law enforcement firearms trainers org.

Thirdly, there is already a thread on this in 'elections.'

That's because people like Gates will find a way to skirt the law by having armed security guards.
There's no law skirting there. What the Initiative is trying to prevent is for criminals and terrorists to have easy access to firearms and a way to hold accountable people who would sell firearms to such people.

There's no rights being given up here. You can still buy the same guns as you did before. You just have to prove that you're not a criminal, terrorist, etc, before you do so. Time to take off that tin foil hat.

So you have comprehensive data that shows it is a real problem that criminals and terrorists are buying guns from other private parties requiring this law that infringes on civil rights?

Do you even have comparable data from states that have this type of law in place compared to states that don't have this law? Or data showing a marked drop in crime in states once this type of law has been passed?

Or

Are you just guessing; making things up because this fits your goal of regulating firearms and their owners?

Whether it is the conservative Koch Brothers or the liberal Mr. Gates, the people of this country will be in the cross-fire as billionaires duel it out in the airways to support a pet cause or fight a pet peeve. I don't think it is is good for the country's political health but that is the way it will be. Going to the issue at hand, Gates is right. There is nothing wrong with trying to keep weapons put of the hands of crooks and terrorists. Universal background checks should be the norm.

I thought the burden of proof rested on the government...not the other way around.

If you like these gun control laws you should visit California & see how well those laws have worked out.

Criminals and terrorists don't use background checks that would be nearly as stupid as some posts I just read.

if liberals want to ban any type of firearm, or go for registration or limiting anything, then they better start by removing all foreign troops from American soil, remove the Un from the USA, and get rid of all government possession of all firearms and other weapons.
