I’m old enough to remember when not having France in the coalition was enough to discredit George W. Bush’s “coalition of the willing.” France has been at many times a balky ally, but Germany has been more consonant with American policy — and the UK practically our twin on global security. This sounds like a NATO split, which would come at a very bad time indeed for Europe as it faces a resurgent and aggressive Russian threat.

More to the point, though, what does this say about Obama’s strategic preparation? Did he bother to check in with the Brits and the Germans before pledging his “broad coalition of partners” last night? It would appear not, and that Obama just assumed that they would follow whatever plan he laid out last night. Obama could have framed the Syrian phase separately as a uniquely American security concern and set expectations properly. Instead, it looks as though Obama and his political team wrote a speech without building the necessary commitment from allies to allow them to be part of a united front on global security.

Let's all take a trip down memory lane. When W. invaded Iraq, the Coalition of the Willing was thirty countries. Despite that fact, liberals soiled their panties and claimed Wild West George W. Bush was "going it alone" in the Middle East.

My guess is we won't hear anything of the sort from our hypocritical and intellectually dishonest friends on the left.

He laid out a plan last night to take them out. He was already doing airstrikes....for what about a month now? ISIS is around because Dubya decided to play war commander and disrupt a controlled country and put in a US puppet who can't control JACK! Republicans as usual. Whine when Obama does nothing then when he does do something they just keep whining! Like a bunch of babies in a room all whining and crying together for someone to come change their diapers. If it wasn't for THEIR screw up WE WOULD NOT BE IN THIS SITUATION!

Ehm - Germany wasn't in the Coalition of the Drilling, either.

Damn, that was quick, what did he do, scare them into stopping their murderous ways just by making that speech ? If he parts the seas next I'm going to have a new respect for him.

I can't believe O wants to give arms to the opposition. That's the biggest failure waiting to happen. They take the weapons and become a new rebel faction and fight against us.

Such a foolish proposition.

We already gave them...Benghazi where arms went from Libya to Syria via Turkey.
We also trained them in 2012 in a not so secret anymore training camp in Jordan.

These are "our" monsters that we created, trained and armed.

And we did that so they could overthrow Assad for us.
What remaining "rebels" there are will be ISIS soon enough.
