Of course not. We do it because we're culturally accustomed to believing in equity. There's some sociopaths who will barge their way in ,cutting places in line agressively, but we all dislike them.

Now, let's change the scene a bit. We go to the airport to find that instead of 4 lines, there's only 2, as half of the equipment is not working. And, there's a TSA person directing people to the lines. If the TSA waves you to the one on the left, you go to the one on the left. And vice versa.

But what if the left line has nothing but pretty women in it and is short, and the other one is very, very long, and he tells you to go to the long line? Do you obey? And why or why not?
I go to the long line so I can stare at the hot women. Probably easier to see all the candy from that vantage point. Plus the longer I'm in line the more hot women I get to see going thru the short line.

Lemons into lemonade...

Most of us make choices that we believe to be beneficial to ourselves. Many of us would love to cut in line, but don't think that we could get away with it, so we don't. This is proven by the fact that many places with notorious long lines, like Disney World or Universal Studios, offer options to pay for the ability to cut in line and get away with it. And many do.

With authority, it's the same way. We could resist authority, but to what benefit? Is it worth the hassle? Most of us choose to abide by orders of authority, because it's the lesser inconvenience. If a TSA workers gives me orders to go stand in a line that I don't like, I'll do it, not because I'm a mindless sheep, but because it's the most reasonable choice for me to make in order to get what I want, which is getting on my flight and to my destination. What would I get out of resisting his order? Handcuffed or detained, causing me to miss my flight and ruin my plans. Why would any rational person choose that option?

If you ever have taken or do take a course in Behavioral Psychology you will note the different types of Power poles and how they are ordered and constructed.
