And illegal. Rather than quitting, your son should have reported the employer for breaking the law. In the U.S. no one is allowed to go home with less than minimum wage ($7.25 or whatever).

Very illegal, but it's the way it's done in a lot a places and and hard to prove since the staff is encouraged to report false figures to the mgt. It's all implied, and the few times he's mentioned it to mgt they refused to give him any concrete answers, just things along the lines of 'do what you feel is best for you'. Since he wants to continue his barkeeping he's not going to cut off his nose to spite his face, word gets around.

Sf wait staff make $10.75 an hour, so + tips I hear they do well.

Whole foods staff make $10.75 but no tip.

So handing you a plate of food someone else made = a tip

Making the plate of food you are about to eat = no tip

People helping to make it possible for you to buy food to make yourself = no tip

Maybe next nurses and firemen will want a tip? maybe the police a good tip for coming quick for a 911 call about something odd on the door step (it was a rock, local true story)
