Didn't take long before they fell out amongst themselves, splitting into as many factions as the socialists & communists, each seeking to harshly punish dissention. Somehow, we got past that, and millions of descendants of those Pilgrims are neither religious fanatics nor still wearing 17th-century clothing styles.
The convert can often be more fervent than the lifelong member of the fold. We need to ignore them more, and don't offer them concessions. Practice your religion all you want, but don't ask us to close our businesses for you or change our schedules. Freedom of religion, plus freedom from religion.
Who are the newcomers? For Native americans, the europeans settlers are the newcomers

"These folks are no different than the Indians that walk around with their garb and dots on their forehead"

Oh yes they are. Indian women's attire is colorful, creative and visually attractive. Plus, it doesn't send the message of a society dominated by men. Muslim women should demand that men wear burkas. I guarantee that crap wouldn't last long.

I do believe in adapting to culture whatever you happen to live. That doesn't mean you have to change your religion or dress exactly like your neighbors, but IMO it does mean YOU have to do SOME adapting. And hiding yourself in a burka isn't just a "fashion" choice, it's actually hiding your identity and expecting people to accept and respect you. Not. Going. To. Happen. It will cause problems and we can't PC our way around that.

I hate seeing women in burqas with their faces covered as it goes against everything I believe in respects to women's rights. However, this is the US and they should be allowed to wear whatever they want.

And NO, we are NOT a Christian nation. We are a secular nation with a Christian majority.

I'm not sure about this thread. The full burka (with only the eyes being visible) is worn by very fundamentalist Muslim women, isn't it? But they're on a college campus (assuming getting a college education)? I live in a huge city full of immigrants from all over the world and I can only remember seeing that dress a couple of times. One time that sticks out to me was when my then fiancé and I were having dinner out and there was a group coming in to dine, the men waited for the table and when it was ready, went and collected their wives from the car (I think) to bring them to the table. It was interesting to me because my assumption was that it was improper for the women to be standing around with a bunch of strangers waiting for a table, but who knows? Maybe I was wrong. Anyhow, wondering why women in full burkas would be working towards a degree? Not wrapping my head (no pun!) around this, just trying to learn.

We have women on my campus who wear hijab, burkas, or niqab, and I don't see why it's any of my business what they wear.

I dislike cultures that denigrate women, and that's one of my big problems with fundamentalists (and not just in Islam). But how am I to know if those women are being forced to wear those garments?

I treat them like I treat other big overt displays of religion. Not my choice, none of my business unless it's interfering with my life.

OP, I'm sorry your son was exposed to the horror of diverse religious practices at an institution designed to broaden his horizons. Maybe it's not too late for him to transfer to Bob Jones or Liberty?

I may have to change my negative opinion about burkas...

Until the moderates speak against radicalism, I will lump them all into the same category.
