Monopolies are usually created by government rather than in spite of government.

Exactly. When has the Federal Government ever prevented monopolies LOL? Big Agriculture, oil, banks, war corporations, media-they create and support thriving monopolies that they invest in as well.

The Banker bailouts are a great example. The "too big to fail" banks-Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, Bank Owns America, Citi, Chase- only grew more powerful and to control more aspects of our economy since 2008. Even though most of the bailouts were authorized quietly by The Federal Reserve with no oversight from our Government, but that is a topic for another thread.

Our Government is about as vile as they come-people need to realize this. I'm not saying Corporations are any better but at least nobody expects them to be anything but profit-driven.

Well that is our problem.

Our government has been bought by corporations. People have grown so used to being raped by the neoliberal, authoritarian government that they don't actually know what good government can do. Might want to sit back and do some rational headed thinking on the matter.

The problem is too many people vote for the GOP.. which is a 100% a party designed to serve the interests of the rich and corporations. As a result, America has shifted right drastically over the last 30 years.

Competition. Always and everywhere.

Monopolies happen when government restricts competition as a paid favor. Period. Because without government protecting the monopolistic entity, competition always pops up and steals the monopoly's business to some degree. Two fine examples of before (with government protection) and after (without said protection) are telecomm and satellite TV. Remove government barriers to competition, and someone always does it better, faster, cheaper and more amicably to the consumer than someone else, because they are driven by the profit motive and have to earn your dollar. Another great example going on right now is Uber/Lyft. Only thing saving the taxi cabal is government barriers, because Uber does it better, faster and cheaper.

LOL...like the Democrats aren't bought and paid for as well? Obama and Immelt are pals, and oh my stars and garters, look at GE paying no tax for the last 4 years. How utterly shocking.

I'll repeat the question.. since clearly you didn't answer.

How do you prevent monopolies? There is no competition in capitalism. The guy with the biggest wallet buys his competition.

Just because there is a law against monopolies means nothing to a government which rigs the game. We do not have a free market, it is a government controlled market, any monopolies that you see in existence, exist with the consent and collusion with the government.

Are Democrats blocking limits on campaign contributions?

That law from 1890 is great but we need to deal with the here and now and look at recent actions by our Government.
