By the way, has anybody ever noticed how, whenever there's a coup in some other corner of the world, and a totalitarian regime comes to power, the first thing it does is disarm the citizens? Gee, I wonder why.

"A well regulated Militia" is clearly the subject of that one sentence. The Amendment is about the right of "the people" in the Militia (what today is known as The National Guard) to keep and bare arms. The Government can't ever disarm the National Guard AKA The Militia, because they are responsible for our security.

That's all it says. Plane simple English. It's a very limited Amendment that has been hijacked by gunnuts.

Actually, the National Guard is NOT "the militia"! To be more precise, it is the ORGANIZED militia, as spelled out in title 10, United States Code. The UNorganized militia is THE PEOPLE.
If YOU meet the qualifications, YOU are a member of the UNorganized Militia, and are required to have a weapon and be proficient in its use.
Of course, that law is never enforced.
It is interesting to note how many crimes are committed by LEGAL gun owners. The percentage of the total gun crimes is VERY low for legal owners.

It should be amended to remove the perfunctory phrase before the comma. It should read "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

I think the 1st amendment needs some work too.

this country has become a target a result of too many freedoms.

after all, this isn't the 18th century anymore. Times have changed. it's time to modernize!

I also believe you should need a license to procreate.

Not everyone is qualified for the task of parenthood. There ought to be a vetting process.

Nope. In fact none of the original Bill of Rights should be messed with!

I'm from Scotland and am writing about the American constitution in a modern studies essay. I would like to get opinions from Americans on whether there needs to be changes to this amendment.

Thanks

Good luck. Actually this is a hotly debated subject here in America.

most Americans say no, but a very vocal minority believe we need to get rid of guns.

They have fought in the courts to have the amendment itself redefined in such a way as to allow strict gun control.

The majority would tell you that the Americans have a right to own guns period thank you very much.

Some of us on the majority side, take it a step further. We beleive that according to our founding fathers position, there are some rights that are not granted by government. These rights are inalienable and granted by the creator (you can incert whatever belief system here) and therefore since they cannot be granted by government, they cannot be taken away by government.

Among these is the right to protect oneself from others and even from ones on governmnet, should that government become tyranical (thus thier commitment to fight their British overlords).

BECAUSE of this deeply Amercan belief we are committted to standing against those who would attempt to remove a right from us that was not given to us by government.

I would rather we teach people what "militia" means.

The founders were very clear on the subject. It means every person in the country that is able to stand up to tyranny.

Redraven's definition is perfect.

No, leave it as it is and enforce the current laws that govern gun ownership.
