I saw this news story a couple weeks ago about a team of home-invasion robbers who yelled 'police' as they broke into a home in Kent, Washington, not too far from where I work.

I was curious about how common this is, and it turns out that it's not rare.

It makes sense with the proliferation of no-knock warrants, SWAT team raids, and general police state climate. In particular, the all-to-common stories of raids on the wrong address have created an expectation among the public that you don't have to be Al Capone to get raided by cops.

The utilization of SWAT raids by police departments as an entertainment vehicle, via shows such as 'COPS' only adds to the overall feeling that anybody could be raided at any time. Criminals have naturally taken advantage of this golden opportunity given to them by police. It appears to be increasingly common for home invasion robbers to pose as police. Great going, police of America! Heckuva job!

There was an episode of The First 48 where something similar happened. I know home invasions have also happened where the robbers posed as utility workers.
