Don't you think that might be a bit extreme? Teacher unions usually negotiate for higher pay, working conditions, etc. so instead of making $27K this guy probably started off making $40-$50K. Idk, it just doesn't seem corrupt when you are getting a benefit.

And yes, some places pay $27K.

Should they also forgo blue skies and sunshine since unions take credit for that as well?

Unions negotiate pay and benefits for people who are too screwed-up to get them through their own negotiations.

The above average will always command greater pay and benefits than the excuse makers and unions will always be there to oppose that sort of merit based compensation.

I don't know about elsewhere but here in PA that's about where a new teacher is going to start out but it goes up quick. I think they get as much as a $10k raise in the first three years. 20+ year teacher is making $70K + healthcare + pension. It's about $100K when it's all said and done.

It's a bit higher where I am from. $50-$60K after 2 years up to $150K after 20-30 yrs. Depending on the subject and degrees you can make $90-$100K after 7 years. This is a high performing school though. 27.5 ACT, 1962 SAT, and 4.27 AP scores.

I sure hope that you pay Union wages (inflated and unrealistic) when you hire people to work for you!

Perhaps that's what the true value of the job is.

Doubtful considering TX ranks near the bottom on education metrics. Most likely TX districts get what they pay for.

Teacher's unions, like all unions, negotiate for relaxed standards of performance and accountability.

They reward loyalty to the union over effectiveness and dedication.

All teachers come from the same pool of graduates.

Schools are not good or bad......the parents desire and respect for education determine a "good school".

By far, the lowest performing schools in the world are American inner city schools, with very few exceptions. You may have a few schools that perform well, but they're generally ones that can pick and choose the students that they want and launch the bad apples.
