Everyone has their own passions and goals in life.

We have the two extremes:

Some people are motivated, and really love their jobs, and they love to work hard for 30-35 years and retire at about 50 years old. These people are free and never rely on government to help them

Other people do only just enough to get by, and are happy being subsidized by government and living and working off and on, subsisting at the poverty level for all their lives, and at 65 they retire into poverty. These people will always be dependent on government, friends, neighbors and relatives for financial assistance and support.

40 hours is not living at work, far from it. It is surprising someone in their prime feels supporting themselves to be slavery. Do you expect to be subsidized your entire life?

Many of us have set aside a portion of our income and invested wisely for our future so we can continue being independent. That is old school thinking. Modern indoctrination is to live off the gubmint's teat.

Teaching students to "enjoy life" is not curriculum. Perhaps this is what contributes to the sorry state of our educational system?

Most people do not work 60+ hours a week. That is a silly argument. Often small business owners do that and they reap the rewards of their efforts but the majority of employees work 40 hours or less which certainly is not slavery as the OP claimed.

Nice try.

Shortening the work week is a poorly veiled wage increase. Has the amount of work that needs to be done been reduced? No. It's going to take the same number of people the same amount of time to complete the various tasks that need to be done, only they have less time to do it. That will inevitably lead to overtime, which is the whole point of these proposals.

If you don't want to work 40 hours per week, don't. You have 100% control over how many hours you work each week. If an extra hour per day is that important to you, find a job that will accommodate your requirements.

Ah, the liberal meme of "I care more than you, therefore your argument is invalid" being employed.

Explain how you love most of the people in the country, while nononsenseguy does not. Qualify and quantify this "love" you speak of, because I'm very interested in how one goes about determining one's place on the "love thy neighbor" scale.

By all means, educate me.

There is so much BS from the left in this thread. Work hard and work within your means. LIBS/LIVS Lemmings want everyone else to provide for them. The US is a very wealthy capitalistic country. You earn and live on what you make. But as our country becomes more of a socialistic nation, the sick lame and lazy want more and our government obliges with safety net welfare type programs.
We need a revolution to filter out lazy people.

This argument keeps coming up.

We are not Europe.

40 hours is the standard. Leave it there.

You didn't get free anything.

Someone is paying for it.

Wait until you enter the work force. Then we'll see how fast you change your tune.

Better than what? Better than off-shoring a job?

No.

That would be both an Economics fail and a Political Science fail.

Opportunity Costs: you could purchase your own exotic animals, and keep them on your property and feed them and pay for their veterinary care, or you could have a public zoo, that you can visit whenever you are so inclined.

In this Market, armed security guards go for $15/hour.

$15 * 168 hours * 52 weeks = $131,040 annually for police protection....or you could just pay $2,000 in property taxes.

Clearly, some Opportunity Costs are disguised as taxes.

But it's also clear that some Wealth Redistribution schemes are disguised as taxes.

Buying beer and dope for The Poor™ is Wealth Redistribution, not Opportunity Costs.

Wow, what security guard is going to work that many hours?
