Why do people contribute to charities ?

I recall a former employer that specifically asked for me to contribute to the United Way, I said no, so the employer went out of its way to get me to sign a sheet saying that "I do not wish to contribute".

I see many charities that want contributions from people...I never give.

I always look up charities and see that their CEO gets a six figure income whether it is for profit or non-profit, so I say NO-Way JOSE.

Don't contribute to any charities that pay their own people 6 figure incomes...forget it.

Am I wrong to think this way?

Nah, to each their own. I do think you are stingy though. A $100K salary as a CEO is peanuts.

No, I don't believe in giving to charities either.

What particularly confuses me though is why people give to beggars and poverty pimps.

Yeah, I think the CEO thinks I'm stingy too.

$100k is pretty small for these CEOs. I think the number most of the higher-ups of charities make is somewhere north of $250k - $400k. I wonder how much Susan G. Komen makes. =P

Doctors Without Borders has always rated well as a charity that isn't wasteful, almost all the donated money goes to help people around the world who have medical needs such as blindness, malaria, or Ebola that can't be done by the locals.

Can you substantiate that....?

I always told myself, if theres a transparent charity that has at least a 90% charitable percentage to its donors, I would contribute.
The other factor is the CEO pay salary, if that salary is more than mine, forget it, im not contributing.

Do you apply this standard to businesses too?

Nope, only to charities, a business provides a product and I get something in return.
