Companies like Volvo, Eriksson, Ikea were created under the Swedish social democratic welfare state so I see no reason why Microsoft or Apple couldn't be created in that environment.

Weird, I agree with VTHokieFan on this one. Companies have been created in countries that are socialist countries, so not sure why that would prevent them.

Personally though I like a capitalist system that has safety nets to prevent people from becoming extremely poor.

Firstly; define socialism as YOU think it applies and then we can talk.

Many of the countries you routinely like to diss for being socialistic are less so than the good old U.S. of A.

How did this thread get hijacked? Was the question posed about other countries or the USA?

The question in the OP was, could Microsoft or Apple have been created in a more socialist society? How else to answer than to show that many viable companies were conceived and continue to thrive in such societies?

You just don't like that the answer is yes.

Are we assuming we live under capitalism? We don't. Capitalism allows a company to fail when they make bad decisions.

You're right. Dunno whether I'd call it socialism, but we have seemingly limitless safety nets for certain large companies and very tattered safety nets for everyone else.

In rhetoric, it is known as a "counterexample".

America's left does not want to be Socialists, they want to be "Social-capitalists."

Switzerland is a "Social-capitalist" country, and Switzerland has a better economy than America, their average worker salary is 2x higher than America's, everyone has health insurance, they have very little poverty, ex.ex.
Switzerland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ironic thing is Switzerland is a conservative country. They have a citizen Militia for national defense, public gun ranges, no welfare freeloaders, and everyone has health insurance by conservative policies.

But the fact is America's republicans are not real conservatives, they are Fox news and Rush radio followers. Fox and Rush are corporate backed news groups, and along with CEO politicians they lead America's republicans.

America's republicans don't fight for conservative principles, they fight for corporate tax cuts, and tax cuts for rich CEO's.
