When Lloyd Doggett was my rep, it was like that. No return message. No one ever spoke, it always went to a voice message system and e-mails never replied to.

A bit sad, really. Every time I've contacted my representative, I get a personal response. It's not usually directly from the representative but from staff but still, it's nice to get a response. I had his office help me with something once and they were both responsive and extremely helpful in the situation. I guess it a YMMV.

Oh, yeah, that would certainly help. Then the only people who would run for office would be those with enough money to fund their own campaigns. Is that what you want?

I guess that would end grass roots movements like the 'Tea Party' and all the good candidates out of that movement who have sought public office for the very first time, and won election.

Have you tried faxing your representative?

How knowledgeable are you on the issues? If you contact your representative, but are clueless about an issue, and do not make an intelligent, well thought out argument for your position, perhaps that is the problem. About all anyone could do with someone like that is say, "Thanks for contacting me."

It's difficult to have a conversation or argue with someone who is ignorant.

What is the point of your communication? Are you giving your opinions as in, "I oppose such and such law" or are you asking for help with an issue you're having (approval for something from a state agency, for example)?

The response will vary. For the first you'll get a thank you or acknowledgement of your opinion. What more do you want? For the second, if the representative can influence a decision and you have a legitimate issue, then the response will likely be a bit more involved.

I have received a lot of letters from my congressmen over the years. In the U.S. House, Jim Traficant used to reply to my letters and faxes all the time, and so does our current representative. Traficant was a Democrat, but I liked him a lot. He was not a "Progressive," but was staunch Constitutionalist, and defender of Liberty; not today's Democrat. ["Beam me up, Mr. Speaker!"]

I usually just ask where they stand and why. I don't argue with them about anything.

I have to say that I regularly get responses to my letters and emails.

Unfortunately I can't think of a single time when my representative changed their position on any issue.

The number one priority of any rep is fun raising for himself and party.

Most reps have day jobs,too.
