Is it socialism or communism that the left are aiming for ?
Do you want the USG to own all business or just the important ones ?

An interesting observation when traveling abroad has been that in most other countries a national holiday is taken very seriously. Nothing is open except essential services and food shops mostly close very early.

Why bother with a national holiday in the US if the only people that get to observe it are white collar workers?

Excellent point. Bravo.

Americans can't live unless they're consuming something at a store. We're a nation of shopaholics. It's astounding, really.

You just described what the holidays mean to YOU. You are the only person you can speak for, and it's awfully presumptuous of you to assume that everyone else feels the same way. In fact, that's exactly the sort of thing that a hardcore socialist-leaning liberal would do...

That's what the holidays typically mean to people that aren't misanthropic.

Hint, hint.

If you have something to say, say it. Don't pussyfoot around with innuendos. And watch the assumptions you make about people - they can come back to bite you in the ass.

Why Thanksgiving? Why not Labor Day?
That would at least be more appropriate.
(And, no, I wouldn't agree with that, either)

Calling you a misanthrope is pussyfooting around?

Dude please.

And that assumption is no doubt a correct assumption.

And you couldn't bite me in the ass if you were a saber tooth tiger. Get ahold of yourself.

If you don't want to work on Thanksgiving, don't take a job that might have you work that day.

If you don't think it's fair that someone has to work on Thanksgiving, don't shop at that store.

I don't shop on Thanksgiving because I spend it with family and friends.

Yeah this is probably where I'm at on this issue. Agree with sentiment not sure I want government involved here. It would be nice if more folks were decent enough to not patronize a store on Thanksgiving without government mandating it.
