Anyone who takes from their neighbor to use how they see fit isn't empathetic, so I hope you aren't saying left wing has empathy and isn't self-serving. Maybe they care about the people receiving the benefits, but they don't care about the person they take the money from. Right wing is included if they forcefully take from someone to use how they please.
The majority of our population falls into the center right or center left category, they want the same thing for the most part. The disagreement is how to get from point A to point B
The current dominant form of thought in the West is neoliberal - that is economically right wing, but socially libertarian. We're heading towards a world where people don't care if you're gay, white, black, Jewish, Catholic, a pot smoker, blind, or suffering, but only about your income and wealth.
Yes, the trend in US is definitely going towards more socially liberal. There are very few true conservatives left at this time.
Reading the comments, it amazes me how poorly many, if not most, posters understand the views of the other side.

The biggest difference between the two is that the right wants to hold on to and flaunt their privilege while only thinking myopically about themselves, whereas the left wants to flaunt their mistreatment due to lack of privilege but can still only think myopically about themselves.

Correction, the Left believes that government does have the ability to at least solve some problems
Every time the government gets involved in the name of helping the poor it becomes a bust to everyone. Government has only one interest... taking more of the people's money. The left who believes in big government hopes they will get some of that.
