When I was in school, kids that bused in from rural areas brought their own lunch, and the rest of us walked home to eat. The school on occasion would host a hot dog day or a pizza day where you could buy a hot dog or pizza for a bucks or two, and we were able to get a small carton of chocolate milk (or a milkshake) every day for a quarter.

In high school, most kids would get french fries with gravy or a hamburger from the cafeteria. A lot of us would either walk home for lunch or go to the pizza place down the street for something different.

Of course, this was also in the 80's when parents weren't deathly afraid of perverts hiding around every corner and we were expected to play outside a great deal of the time. Summers were spent swimming, catching frogs, playing ball and riding bikes all over town. The only rule we had was to make sure we were home when the streetlights came on. As such, nobody was really concerned about obesity, because back then kids weren't obese.

Now these same kids I grew up with are raising their kids to shun exercise and be terrified of boogeymen in the world around them. Funny how times have changed that way.

Whining about school lunches is a kids prerogative.

Only now there is substance to that whine.

The kids are making a difference. Good on them for getting involved.

End the Department of Education now.
Should have never been created in the first place, it's not the job of the Feds.

Any school district can opt out of federal funding for school meals and decide what to feed kids, or not.

Any parent can pack a bag of Twinkies for their kid, should they choose to do so.

I wish the federal government would get out of the school meal business and leave it up to the district to decide and most importantly, fund.

In Japan, seaweed is served. No doubt, the kids would prefer McDonands. Japan does not have a childhood obesity problem.

My high school in Chicago, in the 70's used to serve burgers that were comprised of 50% oatmeal. They were actually quite good.

Well too bad!

I bet the starving kids over the world would eat it.

Ungrateful things.

I really do not understand this.......
If they do not want to eat school lunch then why don't they make their own damn brown bag lunches?

Bunch of self entilted pricks

Maybe these latchkey kids should have their absent mommy make them a box lunch the night before, if they can get her to do it before she spends her night on facebook chatting with old boyfriends or get their babydaddy to take a break from his Xbox and do it.

It's their tax money also. The option shouldn't be in forfeiting it.

Why do you assume they are free?
