Blame the Federal Government for this.

"Small town cops piling up military gear including battlefield-grade arsenals thanks to a program that allows them to get their hands on military surplus equipment – amphibious tanks, night-vision goggles, and even barber chairs or underwear – at virtually no cost, except for shipment and maintenance."

Wired, "Small-Town Cops Pile Up on Useless Military Gear"

Give boys of any age a new toy and sooner or later they’ve just got to see if it works.

I fully agree with this..otherwise we can just basically become farm animals in the long run.

Who know now violent Americans will become. I'd have never thought anyone would attack schools. I think the LA shootout where they had to borrow rifles from gun shop showed the need to be better armed.

The militarization of Police Departments is bad business and could potentially be a threat to a government. If this militarization continues, rest assured, police forces will be pushing for and SOMEONE will authorize them to have tanks and more advanced weaponry.

And for those of you that believe that this far fetched...remember the American Civil War.

Things change with time. Police in the past only had to deal with criminals armed with revolvers and shotguns. But today criminals are armed with semi-auto 17 round pistols and AK-47 machine guns (and police need better weapons than criminals.)

And police face dangers from terrorists, traitor military personnel, and armed radical extremist groups. And in certain situations police could need weaponry like tanks in the future to protect citizens from those groups.

They had Beretta 92FS/M9s 9mm and Remington 870 12 gauges. They got their asses handed to them on a platter. Had the local FFL not loaned them ARs with Lake City M855s every one would have been killed or wounded and they would have gotten away.

Things were changing in the public view by '86-'87-'88 anyway.....what was working for Boss Hogg wasn't what was working for anybody else.
