Maybe the grandparents prefer their grandkids to have straight black hair and dark brown eyes just like theirs. They are allowed to have that preference, right?
I don't have grandchildren yet...
But when I do, my PREFERENCE is that they be healthy, smart and beloved.
I have never given a second thought as to their appearance.
That's because such thoughts are kinda dumb.
But am I allowed to be stup...errr, I mean have a physical preference?
Bigotry against asian men seems to be accepted by both the right and left. Make an insulting comment like this and everyone just laughs. Both sides regularly make fun of east asian languages by making nonsensical "chong chong" sounds. And no one seems to mind one bit that asian kids are blatantly discriminated against in academia.
We are easy to pick on. We don't riot and burn down neighborhoods like certain people...
California was trying to reinstate affirmative action. In the absence of affirmative action, the states top schools are overwhelmingly Asian and the idea was to deal with the frustration of white parents.

That's right. Everybody knows that white people are the only acceptable targets for blatant discrimination in academia (and elsewhere).

Asians are honorary semi-white people. Enjoy the "privilege."

I am as liberal as anyone can get, and even I am sick and tired of excuses by the blacks and Hispanics when it comes to academic and employment outcomes.
My family (legally) immigrated to the US back in the 90's. We had absolutely nothing. When I say nothing, I really meant that, nothing. And we couldn't speak a word of English. What's more, we ended up in a city that may be had 2 other families that spoke our language. All 7 of us crammed into a small trailer in a high crime rate area. In school, we were easy targets to be picked on... since we couldn't tell on them due to the language barrier. I got beaten up so many times...
Nowadays, my oldest sister is the head electronic engineer of 2 branches of her multi-national company that employs tens of thousands of US workers. They regularly send her down to the Mexico City branch to train management down there. What's unique about her is she was too old to go to school when we came, and she needed to work to help our parents support the rest of us. So, she started out in the assembly line. Became a technician. Then engineer. Then senior engineer. Eventually, she rose up to being the head engineer. And she still doesn't have a degree.
My oldest brother is a head engineer in his firm.
Next sister is a mathematician who works in nuclear research.
Next brother is an IT project manager.
I'm in middle management at my firm.
Again, we started out with nothing. It took us a quarter of a generation to get to where we are, and we still speak with heavy asian accent.
What's my point? Isn't it time certain people stop using race or economic/social disadvantages as excuses?
And I know what you're thinking. Back in our home country, we already had the education and everything, right? Nope. You know those cocktail shrimp sold in American grocery stores? We used to de-shell them in food sweat shops to be exported to here. My brother, the head engineer, worked as a laborer for years in his teens.
So, when I say we started out here with nothing, I mean it. No money, property, education, nothing. And now, I find out that in school the odds were stacked against us simply because we were classified as asian...?
I say get rid of AA and let our merits decide our fate.

Merit already decides your fate as much as it ever will.
That's because you can't qualify merit...It's whatever some arbitrary person or group thinks it is. They can move those goalposts however and whenever they want.
Again, Affirmative Action has never kept an elite student out of an elite school. If you're an elite student, you will get into an elite program. You guys are making these arguments for nothing.
Will you always get into the elite school of your choice? No. And that's just too bad.
No odds were stacked against you for being Asian. That's a fantasy. You can't make that case legitimately.

You mean the fact that colleges add 300 or so points to SAT scores of black and hispanic students while subtracting 50 or so from asian students doesn't prove my point?
All this practice does is make asian students work even harder while giving some slack to black or Hispanic students.
And for the record, they leave white students' scores alone.
Asian Americans make up a small portion of the US population. Why all the hate?

Again, prove to me that elite Asian students don't get into elite universities because of Affirmative Action.
You can't do it. At best you can prove that they don't get into their first choice, but so what? Life is often about not getting your first choice. Harvard and Brown can't let everyone in that has them as a first choice.
Universities have admissions departments for a reason. If they're only gonna accept the top 6 or 7 thousand scores for admission, then you don't need an admissions department. You'd just be fishing for eggheads. Who wants that?
I don't. Granted, I went to ASU...a good school but nothing elite or special. I'm glad that our students ran the gamut of intelligence, race, personalities, backgrounds, etc...
And it's unreasonable to think that Yale or Columbia would want any different.
Again, prove to me that elite Asian students don't get into elite universities because of Affirmative Action.
Ok, let's play a game. For every $1500 you earn, you send me a check for $50. Tell me if you're willing to play this game. I'll PM you my address. Remember that $50 for every $1500 won't break your bank.
If you don't want to do this, why not? It's not like you're going to lose your house for giving me $50 for every $1500 you earn.
