Why should anyone be subsidized for the personal choice to have a child?
Have a kid, get a few weeks off to bond...obviously not a medical leave for recovery since Daddy can take it... and then dump the kid into someone else's care.
This is not fostering a better home /family life.
Would a woman that gets a puppy be given leave for a few weeks in order to train and housebreak it?

The women with paid leave and job security go back to work.
Yeah sure, when you don't have an intelligent answer, make something up. Well done Welty!

It would have to be under the guise of pick and choose and that is dangerous. A small ma and pa business cannot pay an employee for 3 months the way a mega corporation can.

It would have to apply to companies that employ more than X number of employees...

Lower income people? And European nations don't have lower income people living off the government?

If the United Kingdom became an American state, it would be 49th in median household income besting only Mississippi.

Germany wouldn't even break the top 30!

Six months full salary at MINIMUM. Six more months at half salary. Then one year unpaid with a guarantee to return. We are a disgrace. It's why the family unit has completely collapsed here.

Hey OP, shouldn't you be helping your son study for his Praxis exam(s) instead of posting controversial threads all over these boards to incite others' passions. Good Lord, enough already!

so what? And now it is all the fault of those mean Republicans? You don't live in America so what difference does it make to you? We also don't have to wait months to see a doctor or drive 100 miles for cancer radiation or wait until someone says it is ok to have a Ct scan!!!

Because it builds stronger families and strong families build strong communities.
Not to mention keeping women OFF WELFARE. Now, THAT'S nice, long, extended paid vacation.
No, the OP particularly specified maternity leave. The term maternity is defined as the mother, not either parent. Even so, why should parents get special treatment offering them more compensation than non-parents? Just for breeding? Why the hate towards responsible people that haven't bred kids.

Oh, for the love of God!!

Imagine this scenario. I work in the kitchen of a nursing home. I get pregnant. I can get a short unpaid leave, but I can't afford to live for several months with no money coming in. After I give birth, I can't afford to put the infant in daycare because costs are prohibitive. All my salary goes to daycare and there's nothing left over for rent. So I quit and go on welfare, because it's my only option.

Don't come back with "Well, if you can't afford children, you shouldn't have them."
We both know that "should" does not translate into real life. People will get pregnant whether you like it or not, despite all the howling of what they "should" do.

Here, the women get a year of paid mat leave, and then they have government subsidized daycare so they can afford to go back to work. And they do.
