Even though initial sales said black friday was a dud, some Monday morning QB'ing shows that people spread their sales out through out the month of November more than making it for the year to year sales drop offs that some retail stores had on black friday.

Quote:
Total retail sales rose 0.7 percent in November, as holiday shopping began, and that came despite a sharp tumble in gasoline prices that reduced the dollar value of sales at gas stations by 0.8 percent. Analysts had expected a rise of only 0.4 percent.

Read narrowly, the results show that some survey data suggesting weak post-Thanksgiving Black Friday sales was misleading at best; retail trade groups said at the time that they believed consumers spread their spending more evenly through November than they have in the past, and that appears to hold up.

Was it Penny's that once tried a strategy of everyday pricing- no gimmicks or coupons? It failed.

Give someone a 30%off coupon and they tend to buy more.

GAP and Old Navy do the " whole store 50% off " thing. They swap merchandise for these sales.

Kohls manipulates online pricing , dependent upon promotion.

Nordstroms does price matching as they look over their shoulder at Neiman Marcus.

HSN and QVC are into the flex payment. Do you really need 6 months to pay off a blow dryer?

BOGOs move merchandise , whether people need the stuff or not.

The discounts and gimmicks are baked into the original prices.

Yup. Retail sales hit a new record last year and will end up even higher this year.
When all is said and done it will be a good year for retailers.

With so many people spending $30 less to fill a gas tank and instead of putting it towards a credit card pay off, they are spending it.

LOL, I mostly started this thread for someone who doubted my retail knowledge about a week ago. People seemed to think that Black Friday sales are the end all of a discussion when I had tried to tell them that many companies were up year to year for the entire month.
