First, a backwoods, poor country that does not even have the resources to feed it's people three square meals a day, finds out somehow that a movie is being made satirizing their leader. So they somehow hack into the computers of the company producing it and wreck havoc with the info they find, all the while denying the whole thing.
Seems to me, that if I were making a low budget film with little chance of competing against the holiday blockbusters, some serious marketing would be in order. And being on a limited budget, what better way to market it than to stage a hacking crime, blame North Korea for it, get the press to blow it all out of proportion, and then release the film after millions or maybe BILLIONS in free marketing and press ?
First, everyone hears about the film, and second, almost everyone starts wanting to go see it just to **** off the commies.
Just saying.
Losing 40 million dollars for publicity? Publicity for what? People's imagination sure run wild.
I don't think people are saying the hacking is a publicity stunt, I think they are saying the whole pulling the movie from theaters and riling up everyone's patriotism and turning this movie in a symbol of free expression and patriotism is a stunt.

Sony didn't pull the movie from theaters. The major theater chains, worried about violence, declined to show it.

They asked everyone to pull it after that happened though. To be honest, this is the biggest non story of the year and the only reason why it is getting extensive media coverage is because it happened to a big media company. Furthermore, the only reason why Obama even addressed this case to the world is because Sony Pictures is one of his biggest backers and he has to respond as a result.

Obama addressed it because it was a question asked by Carrie Budoff Brown (of Politico) at the year end press conference.
