If it would have happened to me I would have been pleased. I would realize that my time in the military wasn't wasted as the free right for people to protest was one of the things I was protecting.

Protesting the government is protected, but it does not protect you from getting your ass kicked by a civilian.
The civilian will just get arrested for assault.
