Nasser and the revolutions inspired by him were technically socialists and not communists.
The Nasserists were part of the Non-Aligned Movement and were willing to do business with both the US and the USSR.
Unfortunately, the US for whatever reason decided to follow in the imperial footsteps of its NATO peers and pushed the NAM nations toward the USSR (and eventually Wahhabism for the ones with Muslim populations).
Even though I'm not a big fan of Marxism, don't like state economic intervention and redistribution, I have to give credit where credit is due,
IT WAS THE SOCIALIST AND QUITE FRANKLY EVEN THE COMMUNIST PARTIES WHO SUCCESSFULLY FOUGHT FOR POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE during the 50's and 60's
