I don't like what he said, but as long as his personal beliefs didn't show up on the job I don't think he should have been fired. IF he had let it effect his job in any way, THEN he should be fired.
The question is where is the line? Especially if you are a government employee, what freedoms must you give up on your private time to maintain employment? Especially as the list of undesirable opinions grows.

All I am questioning is the linking of employment to political beliefs that are main stream. The guy's opinion is shared by the majority of people in his area and he was fired for it.
