I've never used Microsoft - even in the 90's.
Are there really any computer users that don't have AdBlock?

The ransomeware is not hard to get rid of. Fortunately, the scammers who put this stuff out are lazy asses who keep tweaking previous code and thus, has the same fundamental behavior.

I've never found one of those that can't be gotten rid of relatively quickly and easily. If you know how, that is.

There are vastly more insidious types of malware that are much harder to find and remove - and more dangerous.

My Moms got a gnarly one from FB. Ads by salus. It's locked a folder so she can't delete the program. I'm still researching best approach. May just reload.

I stripped everything once but it infected the backup so it's back again. Redirects your main page on all browsers, pop ups, slow downs the works. I'd like to personally pay the web designer a visit up close and personal.

Oh, man, that sucks.

Your best option would be a linux based rescue disk that allows you access to the file system via a cd based bootup. There are some antivirus vendors who provide these and google will give you a bunch. If you know what is, precisely, then you may find some good removal info online. Otherwise, be careful that you have a two or more part malware - a TSR or tiny executable part that reinstalls the part you find and remove.

The locking is completely ineffective outside of the operating system's own security system, which is what is exploited.

Use Adblocker and/or a modern browser. The virus hit IE8. IE9 is almost a year old now.
The ads were served by AOL, and HuffPo shows AOL ads. Pretending that it's a liberal problem makes you part of the problem.
