I find the right's sudden embrace of the French, especially in the name of freedom of speech (!), to be hilarious.

Of course I support freedom of speech. But I also support freedom of religion (something the right isn't keen on unless it's their religion), freedom of choice (sexual preference, family planning, women's control of their heath and bodies, etc.), freedom of expression (righties would be the first to tsk-tsk over infidelity, nude beaches, open prostitution, adult subjects on TV at all hours, and other things Europeans routinely engage in).

How about we take Rush Limbaugh and add up every mean or crude thing he's ever said about the French ... their supposed cowardice, their bathing habits, their food choices, their rudeness to Americans, their loose women, their avant-garde art, etc., etc., and see how long it takes him to balance the scales saying nice things about them. It will never happen.

Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité ... American conservatives have about as much respect for that as they have for President Obama.

^^^ Very well put.

They act as if they think we haven't paid any attention at all over the past 14 years. Obama could find the cure for cancer and not get so much as a thank-you. If he showed up in Paris, he would certainly be accused of being an attention hound or trying to make political hay.

You obviously don't see the difference between sympathy for the French people and criticism of the French government. Likewise, and thankfully, the rest of the world holds the same view of most Americans. i.e. While having contempt for the lying idiot in the white house they still generally like the average American. Though admittedly Obama makes that harder each day.

Americans caught up in the false left/right blue/red paradigm would be surprised to learn that most of the French press have dismissed Obama as a right wing war hawk in bed with corrupt bankers & corporate hucksters. Most Americans have no idea what left/liberal really means. Beyond a few wedge issues it's all right wing.

I've been traveling the world since the Carter administration. The worst time to be an American abroad (from a foreign contempt standpoint) was the time between Jan. 20, 2001 and Jan. 20, 2009. The best time to be an American abroad was between Jan. 20, 1993 and Jan. 20, 2001.

These past few years have been middle-of-the-road.

The French are about as consistent in choosing leaders as Americans are. They have had liberal and conservative governments in recent years. As for that person you disrespect by calling him "the lying idiot in the White House," I'd remind you that it was Europeans who bestowed a Nobel Prize on him. And then there was this in Berlin:

Looks like a pretty friendly welcome to me.

ETA & not directed at theoldnorthstate:

I'm neither conservative or liberal - simply a disgusted American who's been showing up on election days for 35 years voting for the least of all evils. Obama defenders - including those in this thread - should remember how difficult it is to have it both ways. If Obama is to be considered a world leader, then he should have been there. To state that conservatives would be throwing hissy fits if he showed is ridiculous. It is YOU - the liberals who worship him - that should be outraged. He let you down with the rest of us. He should have been there to represent ALL of us here in the U.S.....not the right or the left. But keep washing his feet while deriding the rest of us....

I am also disgusted and it just makes me wonder even more how much BO-bama truly IS a Muslim/Islamist sympathizer. There is no excuse whatsoever for the US being a no-show,for such an important show of solidarity,or at least some freaking sympathy!

Agreed. Social media hashtags and unity marches do not protect nations from future terrorist attacks. Diligent intelligence and staying on-the-job 24/7 do.

The President needs to fly halfway around the world everytime there's a shooting in the workplace? Think about that one.

What difference does it truly make if he showed up or not? I personally didnt understand the point of the rally. The terrorist know they're not like, and its not like they rule the country
