I think the first rule of thumb in business affairs is never bring up religion or politics whether you know that client or customer or hardly know them.

In social settings unless you are at gathering of like-minded individuals, I would also avoid the subject only because you don't know how the other person will react. Some people could care less; some people are very defensive about their politics or religion.

Leftists show no tolerance for ideas they don't agree with. They want to force their depravities upon the majority.
Or else.
Fortunately, they are in the minority and the pendulum is retreating. Just read the apoplectic rants to follow!

Sem of the right-wing posters are proving my point that you should never bring up politics in social settings with people you don't know.

But that was the intent of the thread. I'm hyper-aware of the political views of those around me. My conservative views are well known at work and social settings. I tend not to waste my time with functions where liberals are in attendance. Just sayin'.

It just never comes up ..... I'm always a bit shocked when a total stranger (which occasionally happens) says something to me about politics. My friends and family just don't discuss this stuff .... I guess we all have real lives that we are involved in.

I do have one sister in law that always wants to start an argument about something to do with her Far Left Ideology - everyone just ignores it and changes the subject and most of them are voters on the Left ... or at least I suspect they are. We don't really ever discuss it.

My father was a pol (council-person), so we talked about politics a lot. However, I don't think he talked politics much outside the family. He and my mom were active members of a conservative church, so they talked about religion a lot too, but again, mostly with the family and fellow church members. DH and I seldom talk politics/religion with others.

Depends on my mood and where I am. I don't get offended, but sometimes annoyed.

Yes, they certainly do. Of course, they won't admit it, but I've experienced it and known other conservatives who have also experienced it.

It's the problem of being on the side of tolerance. If you're on the side of being open minded and tolerant, then it's perfectly okay for you to be narrow minded and intolerant.

It's the Paradox of Tolerance and entire books have been written about it.
