How will you be celebrating the day? I suspect most people, even African-Americans will not do anything special today. Unlike other holidays, where people actually have activities revolving around the holiday, some "holidays" are just a lame excuse for a day off from work/school. And for a leader who fought for inclusion in the schools and workplace, it's quite ironic.
having the MLK holiday caused the loss of another holiday....used to be you celebrated Lincoln(12) and Washington(22) in feb....because of MLK its not combined into presidents day
MLK was a great man.... but why NEED a holiday for him....there have been hundreds of great men and women since the birth of our country
"On June 10th, 1964, Everett Dirksen (R-IL), the Republican Leader in the U.S. Senate, condemned the Democrats’ 57-day filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Leading the Democrats in their opposition to civil rights for African-Americans was Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV). Byrd, who got into politics as a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan, spoke against the bill for fourteen straight hours. Democrats still call Robert Byrd “the conscience of the Senate.”
Here's a breakdown by party on how they voted on The Civil Rights Act of 1964.......
House of Representatives:
Democrats for: 152
Democrats against: 96
Republicans for: 138
Republicans against: 34
Why is it "disgusting" to vote against another day where American employers must pay their employees to not work?
BTW - 10 years in the military and my entire 17 year career in civilian life later...I have never actually gotten that day off. I am at work right now, same as every other MLK Day. I don't get President's Day off either...like ever.
