Military says Washington state marijuana shops 'off-limits' to troops
By Victoria Cavaliere SEATTLE (Reuters) - A U.S. military base south of Seattle has sent letters warning retail marijuana shops that military personnel are banned from entering their businesses and buying cannabis products, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
Ummm...by what authority do military commanders send WARNING letters to local retail business about banning soldiers from businesses?
The people they need to warn are soldiers...not retailers. Retailers should sell their products to anyone coming through that door of legal age.

The spokesperson says as much in the article:
Quote:
Kubistek said the base had no intention of interfering with the businesses' operations and that avoiding pot shops is the legal responsibility of service members who fall under the purview of military law.
But then what is the point of the letters being sent out in the first place? The DoD apparently has too much money.
That's what i wanna know. Who in the hell are military officials to send letters to private retailers about who they can and can't serve?
Sounds like the IRS.......if you notice it all revolves around the government, just a lot of covered up names. Reminds me of when President Obama complaining about Washington, does he not realize he is Washington. I am beginning to think the government is smoking the better stuff.
Wonder when the letter will go out to all porn shops, asking for all US representatives to not be accepted.
It's pretty standard practice. They're not telling the business they can't serve military, they're telling the shops the base command has banned their soldiers from entering the businesses. Military police can watch the business for service members entering the business and can arrest the soldier for doing so. Bases regularly designate places as off limits. They warn the base personnel and send notifications to the businesses. Not everyone obeys. Sometimes soldiers & sailors use this list of banned places as a check-off to do list. But in this case, though pot is legal in the state, it's still an illegal controlled substance in the military and the military does random drug test. Military drug test isn't like civilian drug test. When we went to pee in the cup, someone was standing right next to us watching to ensure it really was our urine. They collect your military I'D and hold it until you give your sample. In the Navy, this means you can't leave the ship till you fill the cup.

The military has been putting places off limits from military personnel for years. Nothing wrong with it.

Well every link i've found makes no mention of the IRS.

This doesn't sound like standard practice...this sounds like bullying, and i'm quite familiar with establishments being put "off limits." I live outside of a military town.
This link suggests that the letters were actually threatening business owners. Or at least hinting at a threat.
The letters, dated Jan. 21, say military personnel will be indefinitely prohibited from entering such a business unless its owner agrees to stop selling substances similar to marijuana.
The military has no business asking private business owner to agree to anything like that. That's ridiculous.
Quote:
Hilary Bricken, a Seattle attorney, said two of the marijuana businesses she represents had received the letters. She said the shops have no responsibility to inquire about the military status of their customers but noted that some operators were concerned about repercussions if they don't respond.
Ehhh...business owners being concerned about repercussions if they don't respond? Repercussions? From the military... For a legal substance?
Quote:
The letter states that shops have 30 days to present evidence to the Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board at Joint Base Lewis-McChord — which oversees military personnel in the region — that the businesses agree to stop selling the substances to military personnel.
Whaaaaat? 30 days to present evidence to the AFDCB? WTH kinda nonsense is that? A private business being asked to present evidence to the military?
What the hell is this? A tribunal?
Quote:
However, Kubistek noted that the letters are similar to ones the military is required to send to any businesses deemed to be harmful to members of the military and that the onus is on military members to know they should not to go there, not for shops to be required to determine whether their customers are military or not.
My point exactly.
