The Federal governments size and overreach gets bigger and bigger, almost daily.

Under which President and their administrations, has the federal government not grown in size and freedoms it grabbed.
If you can find one, what was the results?

Almost every one prior to Teddy Roosevelt.

They understood their constitutional limits.

Not much faith in this question?
The truth usually shuts them up.

There probably is not one. However, on the flip side Government "overreach" as you call it brought about

Child labor laws
Clean air and water standards
civil rights laws
interstate highway system
water rights laws

First question would be, are we better of for these efforts than without them?

2nd question would be, could the states have accomplished the same things?

The first answer, in my mind, is yes.
The second answer, in my mind, is no.

There would be to many conflicting state laws. A perfect example would be clean air. You could have Wisconson saying ********* Michigan, your laws are stricter than ours, so what if our crappy regulations ultimately affect your air quality.

Maybe Colorado should keep all its runoff into the river and say "screw- you" to the areas downriver because those states farmers compete against our states farmers.

Definitely lets let corporations hire 12 year olds and clean the insides of smelters.

Did you ever see the Cuyahoga river in the 60's and 70's. When you could see it through the haze in Cleveland it was a very beautiful mosaic of colors.

Is there over regulation, undoubtedly, and I am all for serious reviews and rewrites as needed.
I am quite happy that the federal government has gotten bigger.

David Atchison. Although some debate whether he should be considered president at the time the rules to me seem clear....
