Since my husband works in the airline industry, I spend a lot of time in airports. It bugs the CRAP out of me that EVERY page that comes over the PA is from somebody with an accent so thick that you can't make out what they're saying. If I were being paged, I'd want to know about it. Why don't they use people who have a good grasp on the English language to do the announcements and have the heavily-accented ones do other tasks?

And yes, while I don't expect people moving to our country to have a perfect grasp on our language, I at least want them to be making an effort to learn it, even if it takes them years to do so. If you don't care to be able to communicate with the citizens of the country you moved to, why do you even want to be among us?

We have accents in our own country that are hard for others to understand.

That's odd. I work with many second generation Mexicans. They are no different than you and me. No Spanish. No accent. And I lost a couple bets to them on the Super Bowl.

I spent a short time in southern Louisiana back in the early '80s. Nice people, but I had no clue what they were saying.

nvxplorer, I totally agree that this issue can be code for get rid of all the mexicans, which is catch all for everyone from latin america, which is absolutely wrong, but you cannot sit here and tell me that every single person living in this country speaks functional english, because that is absolutely not the case. I've encountered many people, from all kinds of places, who work in service jobs, and find it extremely difficult to exchange information with them.

Do I think they need to go back to their own country? No. Do I wish I they spoke the common language, the language that let's people from all over the world communicate with each other? Yes.
