Facts usually don't get in the way of a good National Review story. Bill Buckley's asshat spirit is still alive and well.

Some shill for an American based conservative think tank that receives it's funding from entities with these agendas:

"In 2001, the Baptist Press reported, "Discovery Institute ... with its $4 million annual budget ($1.2 million of which is for the Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture) is heavily funded by evangelical Christians. Maclellan Foundation of Chattanooga, Tenn., for example, awarded $350,000 to the institute with the hope researchers would be able to prove evolution to be a false theory.

"In 2005, the Washington Post reported, "Meyer said the institute accepts money from such wealthy conservatives as Howard Ahmanson Jr., who once said his goal is 'the total integration of biblical law into our lives,' and the Maclellan Foundation, which commits itself to 'the infallibility of the Scripture.'"

"the group's real purpose is to undercut church-state separation and turn public schools into religious indoctrination centers." U.S. District Court Judge John E. Jones III concluded in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, "The CSRC expressly announces, in the Wedge Document, a program of Christian apologetics to promote ID. A careful review of the Wedge Document's goals and language throughout the document reveals cultural and religious goals, as opposed to scientific ones."

"Several Discovery Institute fellows have left the Institute over its religious positions and campaign"

Yeppers; let's all shive-a-git what some religious nuttery org. in the state of Washington has to say about Canada's assisted suicide laws.

I expect the numbers will eventually go down.

For lack of a better term, there were lots of people who were suffering for years and even decades and were waiting for this law to pass in order that they could request that their lives be ended medically.

Yup, like divorce. When it became legal we saw alot of alarming headlines about the high divorce rates, because so many unhappy marriages could finally end. That rate has now been declining for years and divorces are now far less common than when I was a child.

I work in an area where these requests should be most common ...in the 1500 to 2000 people we deal with not even one request to date.

Choosing to end your life is a complicated decision. Even in the current system it takes many wèeks for the final act to be carried out giving tine to someone to change their mind or die of natural causes.

Lots of people say they would do it ..... but very few actually do.

I wonder how many Canadians are not even aware yet that assisted suicide is an option in certain situations. Someone who is struggling with a serious illness, for example, or is in and out of the hospital regularly may not make keeping up with the news a priority. Those in nursing homes are probably not online and probably never see a newspaper.

No actually a certain middle eastern religion is growing fast in Canada. The most backward of all religions but is viewed as progressive and tolerant by many Canadians.
