It pretty much is a cult of Islam, but Americans seem intent to define all of Islam by this narrow cult so it's just called Islam. It would be like arguing that the Branch Davidians are a good representation of Christians.
A "cult" doesn't sound as threatening as a "terrorist group". Terror and terrorism have been the buzzwords the past decade, and the media surely wouldn't give it up now.
Because a cult isn't consistent with divide and conquer propaganda.
Christians need to be convinced to hate Muslims. That way, the Christians will forget that their schools are being defunded, unions are choking on their last breath, wages are still stagnant, and the TPP is about to be passed behind closed doors.

This essentially. The impression of a cult is a group of people who share a common core of bizarre beliefs (typically of a religious nature) and seclude themselves from the outside world. But they generally don't hurt other people. A cult can also be a terror group if they do, but at this point I think ISIS is too large to be classified as a cult anyway.
And what's one of the defining characteristics of a cult? It's difficult to leave. So why do we never really hear about cults that are based on Islamic teachings?
Most Islamic scholars have traditionally considered apostasy to be punishable by death, so the entire religion is cult like in nature. At least Christians aren't stoned if they want to convert to something else.

Just for the sake of clarity, when was the last time a Christian was stoned, harassed, killed, burnt or otherwise molested in Indonesia? You do know that Indonesia has the largest population of Muslims on the planet by a very large margin, don't you?

This.
Cults don't necessarily go around killing people or seizing large portions of unstable countries.
