This guy sounds like a drama queen with a need to call attention to himself. They went out of their way to find him a different type of job. Good riddance. I hope he doesn't get a dime. Btw, Costco is constantly be praised for being one of the top companies to work for.
To me, this is the same thing as when a pharmacy employee refuses to sell birth control or plan B. If the company you works for sells a particular product, you sell the product or find another place to work.
He was given a lateral move (with the same pay) to accommodate his religious beliefs. Costco did nothing wrong. I suspect he could parlay said beliefs into his choice of position in the company but it does not work that way there. This is a very frivolous lawsuit.
It serves Costco right. The supposedly model employer that pays college grad wages to cart pushers. Then there is this. There is no prohibition against touching pork or alcohol. He is making it up. It is about consuming them. Besides, the pork is wrapped and the alcohol is bottled. There is no touching. I would put a mullah on the witness stand to get to the bottom of this.
Asking ain't getting. so he filed a discrimination suit. so what? Anyone can file a suit, its getting it paid that is the bottle neck. Then, of course, there's the appeals process, which can drag on for years.
About the pork thing....well, years ago, we were at a restaurant at Disney. A customer at another table asked the waiter about a pork sandwich, how it was prepared, or some such question. the young man answered, very politely, he truly didn't know, because he doesn't eat pork, but he would ask his manager. Well, the customer went off, saying ifhe didn't want to work with pork why was he working there, etc, etc......when the manager came, I took up for the waiter. I said I thought he handled it as best he could, he wasn't familiar with the dish, so he got someone who could answer the question, he wasn't nasty, or uppity, just deferred the question to someone who could better handle the question.
Oh, the other customer started screaming at me, I was probably a terrorist! We just left the restaurant, with our two children, who were starting to cry. The restaurant gave us a certificate good for any restaurant at WDW..the waiter was trembling.....what a situation!
There is a guy at my local whole foods who will slide his hand inside of a plastic baggie you put fruit/nuts in and grab any pork item that way so there is an extra layer between he and the food. He then pulls it through and it is wrapped up extra nice and neat. Problem solved.
Religious belief - they always lead to "unnecessary" complications in life. Why are people religious to this extend? Just take the good and throw nonsense like this out of the window.
