Ask your lord and savior Dear Leader, Mr Black Irish himself
Both him and Mohammad Ali(Ali's great-grandfather was from Ireland). I wonder if its frowned on them to celibrate thier Irish roots if they happen to be black and Irish. Both have more Irish in them than I ever will (None).
I'm going with the drink, music and the Irish food associated with St Patrick's Day.
I say the same thing about Gay Pride parades. You want everyone to celebrate with you? You need to come up with a gay dish to go along with the parade and nail down the music.
Black History month 1) is too long and 2) needs a parade and a special dish. Have a one day event, throw a big parade in the major cities, sell soul food with street vendors, celebrate the music, it will be a big deal.
Black history month/MLK day always has such a somber tone, understandable so of course.
It would be lovely to have a day of African/Black culture as nothing but a day of fun. Get some community African dance going etc. BTW, I randomly took an African dance class once with a friend and it was totally fun! Not to mention a great work out!

The Irish have been here long enough for all the bigotry toward them has gone. Everybody enjoys a holiday that involves green beer. Unfortunately, MLK day will never be a big one for saloons and shenanigans.
Why is there no mention of a Polish, Chinese, German, Italian, Jewish, Norwegian, Japanese, Swedish, or other minority holidays here on this thread? There are a ton of minorities who are citizens that never got their own day of drunken excess. Why not discuss them, instead of our black folks? What's the deal with singling out just one minority of the many who live here side by side?
After all, every one of my little list all have beer drinking traditions of their own. Mankind has always loved beer everywhere.
African Americans have to defend the celebration of black history month or anything "African", yet, why do the Irish in America get their "Irish" day so widely accepted? Whatever happened to just being "American"...when it comes to the Irish.
There are probably less than a million Irish people in America, Black History month is mostly about Black History... St Patrick's day is mostly about wearing green and getting drunk...

That's not true. There are millions upon millions of people across America who are descended from Irish immigrants. It may be a very, very small part of their genetic heritage, but it's there. However, that does not mean that they are cultural Irish-Americans.

Texas cities/towns celebrate Juneteenth as a festive day with parades, rodeo and town festivals with music, rides and lots of food.
