By most indications we spend more on the military/defense than a number of other nations combined. Is there really any reason to feel threatened by nations like Iran as so many would have us believe? Surely all the $$$ invested has at least bought us the capability to defend ourselves against that alleged threat?

The alleged threat may be the next country that seeks nuclear weapons. If they continue to proliferate it's only a matter of time before someone uses one and that is not going to turn out well for anyone. It has to end.

By what means?
Look at those who already have them like N Korea and Pakistan. You can't un-ring the bell, how to neutralize it? And don't continuing ineffective attempts at policing a world that won't listen have to end too?

We used two of them, watched nukes proliferate, and things are going pretty damn well from where I sit.

Look.....I cannot make this any easier.
Your entire life revolves around the Petro-Dollar....your Standard of Living.....your Life-Style....everything, as in every "thing," as in every stinking single thing.
If you never touched another drop of oil as a country for the next 1,000 years, the only thing that would happen, is that you'd spend even more money on "defense."
In what currency are oil, natural gas, precious metals, minerals, and commodities like rice, corn, wheat, soy, cotton, etc etc etc, sold on the World Market?
That is the crux of the matter.
Learn it......know it.....hate it....
What on Earth do you think will happen when China, Japan and Korea announce a new unified Asian currency?
And the ASEAN States?
Granted, the ASEAN States are moving toward economic stabilization before unifying their currencies, and that will take several decades, but at least they're smarter than the Europeans.
If the rest of the world isn't holding and using and trading in US Dollars, then you x-Box and iPhone and iPod and iPad and iLife and iWorld go down the iToilet.

It's for the preservation of the US dollar. We spend on defense not because we fear invasion but want to maintain our economic dominance.
