The real unemployment rate is around 11%, which is the U-6 number from the BLS.
People over 65 and under 16 are not in the workforce so cut them out, then cut out those who retired early.
The real unemployed/under employed are those who'd like full time work but can not find. The official unemployment number, the U-3, excludes under employed and discouraged workers which I think is the wrong measure because it is too easy to manipulate that discouraged worker number.
PS Why are people posting YouTube videos from crazy people? Aren't there some cool cat videos they could post instead?
Is this criteria used for U-6?
Under employed and unemployed are two different things.... an underemployed person is not unemployed. which one is just the Unemployment rate? as in people younger than 65, older than 16 who do not have a job.

Government touting false numbers to "make themselves look good" shows just how little they care about the people. It's all about the self serving politicians, not the people.
If the government also reports U-6 numbers, then how is it touting false numbers ????
by the way, if the government went by U-6 all the time. It would still mean that the number of people not working has dropped 6 percentage points since its height.
I would say the actual number is somewhere between 10 to 15%. I don't think any reasonable person believes the government whitewash of the numbers, but 59% is a huge stretch.

Somebody already pointed out that that 59%, if true (because math is easy to screw with), includes the retired, stay at home parents, caregivers, and every child in the United States. Even the infants, who I'm pretty sure are slightly underqualified for entry level work.
But somebody already said that, so I really have nothing to contribute to this conversation apart from a rep point for that person and this gif that represents my reaction when seeing the title of this thread:
Let's see.... I WAS unemployed as of New Years Eve. Didn't get this new job until Jan 19th. So I was unemployed during those 3 wks, but the weeks between final paycheck and new paycheck was pretty painful.
My old paychecks were averaging $800/every 2 wks. New job is averaging $500/every 2 wk paycheck. I live alone and the dog doesn't pay rent. So YEP.... this is a huge financial HURT!
Because I live in ILL.... and don't met all the requirements (ILL is strapped trying to pay for all those Governers in PRISON)... I'm not eligible for a darn thing!
You can't really consider me UN employed. But I am most certainly considered UNDER employed! I'm barely making ends meet.... it's not pretty!

I've been in the workforce since 11 and will be in it long after 65 so count me in.
Workforce participation, has dropped to 63%. It hasn't been this low since Jimmy Carter was running things during the 1970s recession.
